The IRENA Internship Programme offers a small number of outstanding students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to IRENA operations.

The purpose of the internship Programme is to provide a framework through which graduate and/or university students from diverse academic backgrounds may be assigned to the IRENA Agency to enhance their educational experience through practical work assignments. It allows selected candidates to gain insight into the work of the Agency and provides assistance and training in various professional fields.

Applicants should have expressed interest in the field of IRENA’s work; ability to adapt to new environments and work with individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Interns work under the supervision of a staff member at IRENA.

The normal duration of an internship is two months, which can be extended for an additional period of two months, by mutual consent, or longer when there are special academic requirements or special needs of the receiving programmes.

Qualifying for an Internship

Candidates for the internship programme are selected on a competitive basis. The profiles of the interns are matched with the needs of the Agency. The following qualifications are required for consideration:

  • Candidates should be enrolled in a post-graduate programme.
  • Candidates who are advanced in their undergraduate studies may also be accepted.
  • Applicants should therefore be enrolled in a recognized university course of study in fields related to the work of the Agency (including economics, environmental sciences, international law, international relations, natural sciences, engineering, political science, human resources and/or public administration, IT/computer sciences, and communications) at the time of application and during the entire period of internship.
  • Recent graduates will also be included in the internship programme provided the start date of the internship is less than one year from completion of studies.
  • Applicants must be able to work in English. Another language would be an asset.

Expenses and Medical Coverage

  • Interns are paid a fixed modest monthly stipend that is set in the internship agreement and the Agency will also provide a round trip air ticket to interns normally residing beyond commuting distance from the duty station where the internship is to take place. Travel arrangements will be made for the most economical and direct route.
  • The Agency will also assist the intern in obtaining the requisite visa for the duration of the internship, as necessary.
  • All other expenses connected with the Internship will be borne by the intern or by his or her sponsoring Government or academic institution. When the intern is sponsored by his or her government, or academic institution, neither a stipend nor a return air ticket shall be granted by the Agency.
  • In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins. They must also obtain any immunizations required in the country where the internship is to take place.
